Ford's bill 23 is a disaster for tenants!

We must take action to repeal it.

Doug Ford’s new housing bill, named the “More Homes Built Faster Act 2022 (bill 23),” will destroy existing affordable housing units, erode tenants’ rights, and cause evictions. Bill 23 was passed in the Ontario legislature on Nov. 28. We are calling on Ford to repeal the bill.

OVTU supports CUPE education workers

The Ontario government recently passed a law that would prevent the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), from negotiating a new employment contract for Ontario's 55,000 education workers. The law has received criticism for being passed before any negotiation was able to take place. It was pushed through with the Notwithstanding Clause, which allows the Ontario government to make decisions that override the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The result is that 55,000 workers, who are asking for a small raise of $3.35/hour, will be forced to return to work, without the right to negotiate. They could be forced to strike illegally, which might result in thousands of fines for each worker.

How the city election will affect Toronto tenants

The past month has been a busy one for tenants in our community. On Oct. 24, Oakwood Vaughan’s incumbent city councilor Josh Matlow (Ward 12, Toronto-St. Paul’s), won his bid for reelection. 


The election also saw the reelection of Mayor John Tory. Unfortunately, Tory beat tenant-friendly candidate Gil Penalosa, who received
an endorsement from the Toronto ACORN Political Action Committee. Penalosa came in 2nd place.
